"The Last Leaf" Critical Analysis by Rochelle Paras

The short story, “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, was published in 1907. The author tells about a short heartwarming story that shows the struggles and showing how valuable life can be. It gives a short lesson to the readers that the is hope for everything and don’t lose hope, everything has a solution.

The story shows that two friends who have an interest in arts named Sue and Johnsy, they lived together in New York City as they faced their struggles and hardships together. When Johnsy became sick When Johnsy becomes sick one winter, she makes up her mind to die when the last leaf falls from the ivy plant growing outside her window. Sue would do anything to help her friend get well, but she is a poor artist. As the winter wind blows and the rain falls, there seems to be no way to stop the last leaf from falling. The setting of the story is in a small apartment that they share in New York City and also raining very hard, the mood of the story is quite gloomy. One day Sue got a call that their neighbor Mr.Behnman has a serious illness and got rushed to the hospital.

The story is very interesting and well written by the author. I certainly enjoyed the short story because it can give you some essential learning. The structure, the mood, the setting is perfect I can feel or imagine the story right away. The author gave so much learning like the value of life and friendship also the appreciation for art. Surely, this story can inspire so many artists, groups of friends and many more, they also adapt the lessons they get from the story or maybe just experiences.

In conclusion, I recommend this story to other people, because the lessons you gather from it you can apply it in our daily life. Knowing that our life is very valuable and fragile, and we can only live once so we should live out life the fullest and enjoy everything, let’s not waste time. Being loyal to our friends and not giving up on them, showing your loyalty to a friend makes you special and trustworthy enough to be a friend and caring for other people. Lastly, showing appreciation, acknowledging your talents and skills that we are capable of, utilizing it and giving thanks that we have this kind of talent.

Khrissarah Charlize M. Yap 11-Onesta (HUMSS) The Last Leaf By: O. Henry “The Last Leaf” is a short story written by O. Henry, a story that depicts the morbidity of death and of the fancies that come with the idea of it. The story focuses on Johnsy, a starving artist who focuses on the idea of leaving this world by the means of blowing away like a leaf because of a strong gust of wind, which is further exemplified by the main character; willing herself to death, waiting for the final leaf to fall, so that she can finally go to eternal rest. The characters have shown individuality and showcased their own ideologies when it came to death, like how Old Behrman believes that wishing death upon oneself is simply foolish. Johnsy also shows how much she contrasts this idea by her fancies of finally leaving the material earth, mostly affected by the sickness it made her delusional and started imagining herself what the world would be like if she were dead. It i...
