The Last Cascade of Bud
The Last Leaf, a sublime tale written by
O Henry. Talks about a young girl by the name, Johnsy, who is afflicted by an
infection namely Pneumonia. It depicts the treasury of life and the
inevitability of faith which tackle the hindrances we battle throughout our life.
The story begins with a whimsical setting called the “places” and the elucidation
of the current state Johnsy has, the protagonist who the story goes around to.
The chronology of events is smoothly carved in, with the help of the supporting
details. There’s a melodic and picturesque element in the story which correlates
to the lamentable condition of Johnsy facing life and death. The value of life
is the cynosure of the story where all things go back and revolve to it.
The masterpiece created, started
with Johnsy, a teenager diagnosed suffering from an infection that inflames the
air sacs which we all know as Pneumonia; lies in her bed waiting for the last
leaf of the ivy vine on the brick wall she spies on through her window, to fall.
She feasts one’s eye on to each leaf fall. She’s pessimistic towards her health
and says that with the last drop of leaf, she will pass away. Mr. Behrman, a senile
man considers himself as frustrated but a an astonishing painter who is just
waiting for an opportunity to be able to create his masterpiece. He highly
doubts the last leaf on the wall after the real one falls. At the end of the
day, he is still able to finish his anticipated project which we would be
consider real one not for the reason it is fabulous but because it serves as a
plant of hope for Johnsy to fight against what many believed as an unbeatable
illness, acquires Pneumonia and eventually die from it.
The
Last Leaf is the true depiction of O. Henry’s writing attributes: skillful plot
and twist ending, as the story forwards on, the reader would not expect such
heroic act from Mr. Behrman who sacrifices his life and makes a special
appearance, in the end, to show the sacrificial outstanding artistry because he
points it out with passion to save a life, the courage and determination to
make valorous act not to prove his worth but rather help others and attest that
life, is something to enjoy of and fight for.
The story caused me to cry, made me
realize how marvel life is and show me how deep love can be. It has many things
that affects people individually; as what they always say, there’s nothing
impossible when it comes to life. O. Henry is an efficacious writer and he
touched my heart, making me apprehend to the another saying, if you believe and
hope for something it could be possible to happen. It is a remarkably a plot
twist indeed yet I must say this is unexpectedly to be an astonishing creation
done by such a great person. I hope that this masterpiece of him would inspire
millions of people especially those who are fighting for their lives, the
youth.
The theme of this story is definitely
tackles self-sacrifice, Mr. Behrman sacrificed his own health for Johnsy, “never
judge someone by what they appear to be but rather to their actions, how they
manifest the true color of their heart” Mr.Behrman acted fiercely and at the
same time aggressively but his actions show how much he cared for her. I
learned how to exercise my fair judgement, ultimately, actions are the things
that makes an impact.
